We have taught primary for years. We strive to help the kids remember what they learned by teaching principles. For example… Nephi built a boat without any knowledge of how to do it. Our principle is “If I do what the Lord commands, He will teach me what I need to know!”
Principles generally follow the “If… then…” format. This makes it easy for the kids to recognize what they do and the outcome to expect.
Last year, we did this with scrap papers and encouraged them to take them home and share it with their families. I felt like many of them ended up in piles or in the garbage can.
I wanted them to leave with a keepsake page that they can use to remember what they learned throughout the year.
I’m deciding how to utilize it best. My thoughts:
- I keep them in a folder at church, encourage them to use their best writing and give it to them at the end of the year
- Give them the page to take home. Each week, write it out on the paper strip to share with their family and encourage them to write it on the paper when they get home. Perhaps provide a treat at the end of the year if they bring it back all filled out.
