Try this fun twist on your gifting this year to add a bit more fun and curiosity to the mix!
This year I decided to do something new and exciting at my house. My kids are getting older, we don’t buy a lot of toys anymore.
In fact, we try to buy as little as possible and do more with experiences or the couple things they would really like. Often teens have desires that cost more and that require fewer packages.
Here are a few things we have done…
- Wrap them in stacking boxes (we did one for a birthday last year where the box was about 16″ and the gift was 6-8 layers in and about the size of a quarter! It produced lots of family fun and laughter)
- Wrap a small gift with a clue inside that takes them on a scavenger hunt to find the gift
- Coupons for everyone – we give each other time/service via coupons that everyone gives to everyone else!
So here is what I’m doing this year!
I purchased a bunch of reusable fabric gift bags. Then I created some holiday gift stickers/tags with different symbols on them.
Each person is assigned 1-2 symbols and no one but me knows who has which one.
On Christmas, they will find a card with their symbol in the bottom of their stocking. I’m excited for the fun it will bring!
There is now shaking and guessing what their gifts are… however, they have decided to hypothesize on who is which symbol 🙂
It’s fun to see them excited!

I got several sets, but this one is my favorite – good quality, nice ribbon, top ruffle looks nice! (the one red ribbon is from another set I didn’t like as much)
If you want to try this at your house, I’ve made it easy! You can just print it out and use the tags!
Note: They are designed to print on 2″ round labels. If you use bags, I just printed on cardstock, cut, punched a hole, and used the string to tie it on.
I have some fun Christmas Giving Ideas that I’ll share in another post!

**Update 2022**
This year I added some wooden gift tags and drew the symbols on them with acrylic paint markers.

I share some more about it in podcast episode 33.

Those are some really wonderful ideas. This year one of my grand has all her gifts in the freezer because she likes specialty food. But she doesn’t know. All she knows is that there are no packages under the tree with her name on them. I love the symbol idea and I am going to use that next year. Then if gifts are in the freezer no one will feel left out. LOL
