Sometimes in life, we struggle and we don’t quite realize what is happening. We are confused and lost… There can be a simple solution… and it may be right in front of your face.
A few weeks ago my parents came to visit and asked why the lights were out in my kitchen. They asked why all my lights were out. I looked up and realized I had 5 lightbulbs out. All the light in my kitchen was 1 single bulb. I hadn’t even looked up to notice it.
I go about my life and open the windows to let in the sunlight. I remember thinking on occasion how it just seemed a bit gloomy. How I couldn’t quite see as well when washing the dishes. (I did know that bulb was out.. but not the other 4!) Now it was making sense. I was aware of something in my life that was holding me back from the joy I could be experiencing.
The past few weeks we have been transitioning into autumn. It’s getting dark earlier and my natural light was not so light. Everyday I was keenly aware that my light bulbs were burned out and that I did not have any more. Every evening I think “I really need to get new bulbs” and then forget by the next day.
Finally, yesterday I went to Walmart and remembered to get some. (It’s actually been quite joyful that I haven’t been to Walmart in several weeks!). I set them on the counter. This morning I saw them and immediately got on my stool and put them in. I was giddy. The kids were equally excited.
And then there was light!
My kitchen was brighter, my soul was lighter… I felt more joyful. Oh, how grateful I am for a simple $8 fix that brought more light into my life and home.
Now… Why do I tell you this story?
I’ve been pondering on it’s meaning. Think about these questions:
- Do you have something in you life that feels off?
- Are you looking for more light?
- Have you taken a moment to look up and see what is holding you back?
- Do you know what you can do to relieve the pain?
- Is it a simple action that you can easily complete?
- What is stopping you from removing this pain from your life?
For me, I knew my lights were out. In the past, I would have stressed out worrying that it was one more thing to pay for and I wasn’t prepared for it. I would have put off purchasing lightbulbs because I didn’t want to spend the money.
It’s neat to see how far I have come… I had a moment of that thought…I imagined the can lights were $20 a bulb and freaked out inside for a minute. I didn’t even know how which bulb I needed. In the past, I would have been frustrated and made it a priority to get them right away if I knew I could. I would have rearranged my schedule to get them.
Now… I decided that a way would be provided, and I acted in faith. I took out a bulb and got a photo of the inside so I’d be prepared to find the new bulb that was right.
As I walked through Walmart, knowing I had to buy something else, but not remembering what…I remembered. I went in to look and discovered they were $8 for 4 and last 4 years! SOLD! I was so excited!
My mindset has shifted.
- I was open to being corrected
- I expressed gratitude for the awareness of a dark spot in my life.
- Once I was aware of the problem, I knew I would find a solution.
- I was patient in waiting for my desire. I had faith
- I thought about what I desired
- When opportunity presented itself, I acted
- Once I had the solution, I took action and fixed the problem I had.
- I celebrated success and expressed gratitude for the new found light.
Looking back I realize that the ones I imagine were fancy LED versions I saw at HomeDepot a year or so ago. How silly! I had a false impression of the reality of my problem and had imagined it to be much bigger than it really was.
At first I didn’t even know I had a problem… It took someone else pointing it out to me.
In my work as a mentor, I have seen so many people struggle. I am continually working on my own transformation with my mentors. I have discovered a few things…
- Sometimes it takes another person to see what is holding you back
- When you are open to hear, solutions are presented
- Often solutions are more simple than you ever imagined
- Things can change in a moment… your family, your business, your hope, your love
- One decision can change the course of your life
- It’s NEVER too late to change
- A Mentor is a priceless resource
- Surround yourself with those that help you be the best version of YOU!
- Support can come from all different sources
- BELIEVE in your dreams (no matter how large and impossible they may seem)
- I am surrounded by amazing people who love and support me
- I have connections across the world and can provide some support/resource/tool for each person who comes to me.
- Gratitude is the key to success
My hope is that this story and list will help you to identify and change something that will bring more light into your life! It is obviously about so much more than a few light bulbs.
